Solomon

At the end of Ecclesiastes there is a quote that reads

"of making many books there is no end, and much studying is  a weariness of the flesh."

And let me tell you what do I agree! You may notice that it has been a very long time since I have Written even a peep on this blog. It is not because I have been adulterously cheating with another blog I literally just haven't written anything. Earlier... two days ago when I tried to write on another blog I got about three sentences in and thought, "well this isn't going to happen so I guess I better just abandon ship." Now if you notice the two days ago part that I just wrote about, that is also the number of days that I have been working on this blog post. I am currently on line 8 but one line is a quote so really I am just on line 7, But now its 8. Now this is just filler to get further down the page.

Malia, the dinosaur and I went to Chicago for two weeks I wrote then, I guess it was 2 months ago now. It was a great time, but we were given a book list, of good books to read. There were books from great authors, there were books from great people who were not authors, there were books from great authors who wrote terrible books. But all in all it was just a crushing list of books to read. Then when you add to that the entire suitcase of books that we brought to Chicago with us, that makes for an unfathomable amount of reading. A couple weeks later we took the tribe to Detroit for the most expensive weekend in the history of this family. There we were given another book list. This book list was not manditory but let me tell you, there were some really interesting books on this list and I can honestly say that I am excited to read about 80% of the 40 BOOKS ON THAT LIST!!!! Thats right the list was 40 books. If the average length of each book was just 15 pages that make a grand total of INFINITY PAGES!!!

We watch a fair amount of youtube "you watch!" Malia says from over my shoulder and one of the things I find most interesting is when there is a tour of a tubers bookshelf. As bookshelves are a common backdrop for youtube videos I have been able to see many a bookshelf tours. All the different ways that people organize their books fascinate me by type, by author, by quality, quantity, color. However at home my books are organized 1 way... Books I have read, and books I haven't read, the later is always fuller than the former. I get the idea that it will always be that way, there will always be another book that I could add to my shelf, I could always learn something more, I could always be more prepared, and Im not really ready until I have run out of books on the subject.

Previously in his book Solomon talks about the wood cutter having to work harder if his axe is dull. That a dull axe requires more strength. Sage advise, don't get me wrong I can keep up with paul, but it's because I keep my axe sharp. Under the context of learning, education, reading and the like I struggle a little more. I don't read quickly, and I get distracted easily and we have already been over my growing list of added materials. This is where my problem lays. I know that the dull axe demands more strength, but at some point you have to give it a swing. I find myself not swinging more and more these days, between getting married and having the Rex I feel paralyzed with fear of unprepairedness always looking for another book to make sure I know what I think I already know. Seeking out those on the internet on the youtube, Asking people grayer than me, longer in tooth and claw and you know what they love it.

Ask an old Tiger how to hunt and you will get story after story and advise and direction to the moon, but ask an old Tiger to hunt and you will probably get excuses. As a man and as a generation of preparedness, we need to swing more in the pursuit of doing something and sharpen our axes when our strength needs help. We will always be encouraged to "get an education" "listen and learn" but how many people are steeped in debt with no job prospects and now they are totally unable to swing because all they have been taught and told to do is sharpen.

I know this all sounds really strange and metaphorical, but mainly what I am trying to say is I haven't been writing because I thought I needed to study and sharpen my skills. Now I know that Writing is part of that process. Thanks for going down this rabbit hole of a blog today, I promise it will only get more twisted from here on out.
